As a beginner learner in Korean, while working hard on basic Korean grammar concepts, you may also want to learn some basic conversation patterns so as to show off your progress when travelling to Korean or eating at a Korean restaurant. In this post we have summarised some useful phrases in daily lives. We have also prepared a printable PDF summary for your easy reference.

Greetings

General greetings:
안녕하세요. Hello / Good morning / afternoon / evening.
안녕히 가세요. Goodbye. (Used when the speaker is staying and the listener is leaving.)
안녕히 계세요. Goodbye. (Used when the speaker is leaving and the listener is staying.)

When you meet someone for the very first time:
반갑습니다. Nice to meet you.
처음 뵙겠습니다. First time meeting you.

When you meet someone you have met before:
잘 지냈어요? How have you been?
오래만이에요. It’s been a while.

Introduction

저는 (name)입니다. I am (name).
저는 미국 사람입니다. I come from the US.
저는 여행을 좋아합니다. I like travelling.

Saying thankyou

감사합니다. Thank you.
고맙습니다. Thank you.

Saying sorry

죄송합니다. I am sorry.

Invitation

점심 같이 먹을까요? Let’s have lunch together?
네, 좋아요. Yes, sounds good.
죄솧해요. 오늘은 약속이 있어요. Sorry I have plans today.

Request

물어 봐도 됩니까? May I ask you something?
울론이죠. Of course!
좀 들어가도 돼요? May I enter?
네, 그러세요. Yes please go ahead.

At a restaurant

At the reception:
어서 오세요. Welcome.
몇 분이세요? How many people?
두 명이에요. Two people.
예약하셨어요? Do you have a reservation?

At the time of ordering:
메뉴 좀 주세요. Please give me the menu.
주문 할게요. I will order now.
비빔밥 2인분 주세요. Please give me two bibimbaps.

To check the bill:
계산해 주세요. Check the bill please.
